Read on for our highlights…
The world has a new thinnest laptop
In a nutshell: The thinnest laptop out there, the Acer Swift, gets iPhone 8 thinThe world’s thinnest laptop has been getting steadily thinner in recent years. The original MacBook Air changed everything when it first launched in 2008. At around 20mm thick, it was described as ‘ultra-thin’ and was the thinnest laptop in existence.
Fast forward nearly 10 years and the goalposts have seriously shifted. In 2016 we had a laptop (HP Spectre) that almost halved the thickness of the original MacBook Air – coming in at 10.4mm.
The MacBook Air itself continued to slim down – the latest version measures 17mm. The even newer MacBook (no Air) is even slimmer at 13mm.
At CES 2018, the thinnest laptop got even thinner. The Acer Swift is around the same thickness as an iPhone 8, measuring less than 9mm thick.
You may think such a slender laptop would also be slender on power. Not so. The Acer Switch has…
- Powerful Intel Core i7 processor for serious multimedia multitasking
- Full HD 14-inch screen for boxset-binging Netflix in pin-sharp style
- Tough Gorilla Glass screen for peace of mind when on the road
- SSD storage for fast booting and shutting down of your machine
Acer's Jerry Kao says: "The Swift 7 is thin, light and perfect for customers to stay connected on the go."
A favourite laptop gets better
In a nutshell: The much-loved Dell XPS 13 gets even better – thinner, lighter and funkier
We’ve made no secret of our love for the Dell XPS 13 laptop in recent years.
It looks incredible, is super powerful and truly portable – it was launched as the world’s smallest 13 inch laptop, and with its narrow 5mm bezel, it packs in more screen than your average 13 inch model.
Now Dell has improved it further with an updated model launched at CES 2018.
- Even thinner: Clever designers at Dell have made the chassis 30% thinner than the previous model
- Super-sharp: The Full HD screen has been upgraded to a 4K UHD option for 4 times more detail
- Cool keys: The keyboard has been given an overhaul for an even better typing experience
Like the existing XPS 13, it has powerful Intel Core processors and super speedy SSD for running demanding programmes and fast loading.
We think it’s one of the best laptops of 2018 and we’re only in January! Can’t wait for the new one?
Samsung focuses on its pen
In a nutshell: Samsung creates a pen that can capture GIFs as well as create art
Digital pens have become part of everyday life for many people in the last year or so. There’s the Apple Pencil for the iPad Pro, the Surface Pen for the Microsoft Surface 2-in-1 devices and now Samsung with its S-Pen.
Samsung has come up with something new – the Notebook 9, a super-lightweight 2 in 1 laptop packaged with a pen.
Like the Apple Pencil and Surface Pen, Notebook 9 is aimed primarily at artists and designers.
Like a football team with a world-class striker, this lightweight magnesium 2-in-1 is built around the strengths of the S Pen. Artists will love its subtlety – it can recognise 4,096 degrees of pressure sensitivity.
But one of the coolest things is its ability to capture and share GIFs.
