Samsung launches Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have better cameras than their predecessors, with water-resistance and external storage making a return

Samsung has launched its latest flagship smartphones – the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge.

The tech giant unveiled the new phones at a press conference in Barcelona ahead of the Mobile World Congress tech show.

What is the Galaxy S7

The Galaxy S7 is the latest update of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S smartphones. It follows on from the S6, launched last year.

It has better cameras and is water resistant. You can also store more music and photos on the phones by adding a memory card to a new MicroSD slot.

The phone runs on Google's Android operating system, and takes the elegant design of the S6 a step further - with a premium glass and metal finish and a 5.1-inch screen.

What is the Galaxy S7 Edge?

The Galaxy S7 Edge is the Galaxy S7 but with a curved screen. It follows on from last year's S6 Edge - named ‘phone of the year’ in many tech magazine polls.

The screen curves over both side edges of the phone, creating a separate panel. The curve has been refined, and the screen is bigger too – 5.5 inches. The Edge panel gets wider too.

But what’s the screen for? This panel is used to show useful information at-a-glance and provide shortcuts to things like email and selfie mode.

It makes the phone ‘easier to use when you only have one thumb to spare,’ according to Samsung’s Justin Denison.

The 5 best features on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge

Both of the new phones - the S7 and the S7 Edge - have many of the same features. Here we round-up the best.

1. Always checking your phone? Always-on display

Always checking your phone? Get sick of having to wake it up every time? Now you no longer have to – the screen on the new Galaxy phones is always-on.

So you can see ‘useful info like the time or a missed call even when the phone is off,’ says Samsung.

2. Accident prone? Water-resistant

We take our phones everywhere, but there's no need to worry about rain or spilled drinks with the new S7s.  You can dunk the S7 phones in up to 1.5m of water for 30 minutes thanks to the IP68 water resistance rating. Samsung has brought back waterproofing after it was much missed on the S6 phones.

3. Have loads of photos? External storage

Like to keep tons of photos and albums on your phone? You’re going to need more than your phone’s built-in memory. Samsung has added a MicroSD slot to the new S7 phones, so you can add a memory card (up to 200GB) for all your stuff.

4. Love taking pics? Better cameras

Every smartphone worth its salt has a decent camera. Now Samsung says its new S7 handsets' 12 megapixel camera has a 'faster shutter speed and a more accurate autofocus even in low-light conditions’. Here’s how:

  • Better photos in low light: The more light a camera can let in, the better pictures it can take. And Samsung says the S7's rear camera features a larger aperture to let in much more light.
  • Improved autofocus: When taking a picture you can focus faster thanks to a technology called Dual Pixel autofocus. The S7 is the first smartphone to feature this technology, which is normally found in DSLRs.

5. Mobile gamer? Packed with innovative gaming tech

Love gaming on your phone? Samsung has optimised the S7 to give a great gaming performance.

The powerful processor is compatible with cutting-edge gaming tech that lets games get the best from the phone's graphic capabilities.

Graphically demanding games generate lots of heat, but the S7 features a special cooling system to stop it overheating
