What to expect from Mobile World Congress
Will we see the Samsung Galaxy S5? Will Sony´s rumoured Xperia Z2 make an appearance? We round up the rumours ahead of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona...
Mobile World Congress (MWC) gets under way in Barcelona on
Monday amid rumours the new Samsung Galaxy S5 is set to be
MWC is the annual mobile trade show where phone manufacturers launch their flagship models for the coming year - and TechTalk will be there in the thick of it.
We'll give you the lowdown on the hottest phones and tablets coming out of the show, with words, pictures and video. Whether it's the Galaxy S5, smartphones with bendy screens, tablets or even smartwatches, we'll be across it.
But until then we'll whet your appetites by rounding up the rumours of products we can expect to see at MWC 2014…
Samsung Galaxy S5
This is the biggie. Samsung's Galaxy S4 smartphone sold over 40 million in its first six months on sale last year, so there's no wonder we're getting hot under the collar about its successor.
And rumour suggests we're going to see the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone at MWC. This gossip gained more credibility when Samsung sent out press invites to an Unpacked Event to be held on Monday in Barcelona.
Last year Samsung launched the Galaxy S4 at a similar Unpacked event. Because the MWC event is called Unpacked 5, tech writers have taken it to mean the Galaxy S5 is set to make its debut.
But what will it be like? We don't know. But tech site TechRadar reports that "the Galaxy S5 will almost certainly appear in two variants, encompassing a metal frame with high-res screen and a polycarbonate version that sticks with the traditional 1080p display".
Samsung Galaxy Gear 2
(Galaxy Gear as seen at IFA Berlin tech show last year)
Samsung launched its Galaxy Gear smartwatch last year, with the device hooking up with your smartphone for displaying texts and making calls.
Now the rumour mill is suggesting we could see a sequel to this smartwatch at MWC.
Tech site Pocket Lint reported: "There's also talk of a Galaxy Gear 2, an updated smartwatch, with the Samsung Galaxy S5 looking to focus on fitness tracking more than it has in the past."
Sony Xperia Z2
(The Sony Xperia Z1)
Last year Sony opted to launch its flagship phone at CES rather than MWC. The waterproof Xperia Z1 racked up plenty of headlines in Las Vegas, but it looks as though its successor may land at MWC this year.
If the Sony Xperia Z2 does launch in Barcelona, people can expect a "better Z1", according to a report on TechRadar.
As well as being waterproof it'll also offer 4K recording and improved camera technology, according to reports.
LG G2 Pro
We know for a fact the LG Pro 2 will appear at MWC, as LG has already confirmed it. The smartphone is a larger version of its G2 predecessor boasting a 5.9inch screen and an improved camera.
Its camera remains steady even when the photographer doesn't.
The camera lens is floating, so it holds firm even if you move or
stumble. It has also revealed it will be launching its scaled-down
G2 Mini at the show, with a 4.7inch screen, a quadcore Snapdragon
processor and the new Android KitKat operating system.
We'll be delivering video and images live from Barcelona, with regular blog posts to keep you updated.
