Gamers the world over will watch on Wednesday as Sony holds a press event in New York which will see it discuss "the future of the PlayStation business".

The tech media has been rife with speculation about whether this will see the announcement of the much-fabled PlayStation 4.

Sony has remained tight-lipped and given no further indication of what will or won't be said, refusing to confirm widespread rumours that the latest version of the console will be launched.

However, speculation and excitement is reaching fever pitch as the potential launch approaches.
Citing industry sources, The Times has even reported the price at which the PS4 is expected to retail in the UK, while there has been speculation across the tech press over features the console could carry.

Since the first PlayStation console launched in December 1994, Sony has sold more than 310 million home consoles worldwide, and 2.9 billion games.

Ahead of the press event the tech giant has released a series of videos charting the 'Evolution of PlayStation'.

Naturally, the first video looks at the early days of the console, while the second one looks at the PS2 - with lots of shots of the iconic machine, its launch and the games which it ran.

It doesn't take a genius to work out the final video is about the PS3, with footage of people queuing for the console as well as some great action shots of its biggest games and the rise of the PlayStation network.
Of course, what we're all really bothered about is what comes next.

With the PlayStation event getting under way on the East Coast later we could soon have a clearer idea about that.
