Sony has announced its slender new PlayStation 3 will hit the streets later this month.

The Japanese electronics giant has put its much-loved console on a pre-Christmas diet, and the result is a PS3 which is smaller, slimmer and lighter than ever before.

To give you a better idea, Sony reckons it's similar in weight to a laptop, clocking around 2.1kg on the bathroom scales. It's even 20% lighter than the PS3 Slim making it, well, pretty slim indeed.

Although the new PS3 is around half the size of the original 2006 model it still packs plenty of punch, with gamers set for up to 500GB of storage. There will also be a separate model featuring 12GB of flash memory, with a 250GB hard drive available as an upgrade.

The 500GB means more storage space for people looking to turn their PS3 into a true multimedia beast, with the capacity for music and video great for those looking for a joypad break amid an intense PlayStation session.

The news comes after Nintendo said its Wii U will go on sale on November 30, with both consoles likely to be scribbled on kids' letters to Santa up and down the country in the coming weeks.

The Sony announcement came as the gaming world focused on events unfolding at the Tokyo Game Show, where the tablet gaming revolution really caused a stir - and plenty of headlines.

The 500GB PS3 will launch in the UK on September 28, with the 12GB model pencilled in for October 12.
