Renowned throughout the music production world for their all-in-one studio package "Reason", Propellerhead's "Figure" distils their luscious synth engines into a beautifully simple and intuitive interface that makes loop creation fast, fun and hugely satisfying.
Upon initial inspection, the musical elements at your control are fairly limited. You're restricted to an 8 bar loop of bass, drums and a lead synth. There are no pads to hit and no keyboards to tickle. But simplicity is at the core of Figure.
You're presented with a number of columns and three dials which you swipe to produce perfectly synchronous and harmonious synth sounds. While the columns adjust pitch and timbre, the dials alter rhythm and key steps. This is the music production equivalent of a pair of stabilizers: you simply cannot play a duff note.
It takes just moments to start exploring the rich sound palettes and within minutes the true potential of tweaking, looping and leaping around key changes becomes apparent.
Figure is instantly productive and hypnotically immersive. A range of export options allow you to thrust your noodling and doodling into the wider world. Perhaps under specified when compared with more extensive audio applications Propellerhead's unconventional offering punches way above its weight and for a price point of just 69p it's essential for every music lover.
