Popular culture has been blessed with some truly great partnerships down the years, from Batman and Robin to Zig and Zag, but very few of them hold a candle to Kirk and Spock.

And it's their camaraderie that Namco Bandai Games and Paramount Pictures are looking to exploit to the full when Star Trek: The Video Game hits shelves on April 26, 2013.

The sci-fi shooter, a tie-in for the film Star Trek into Darkness which is released in cinemas on May 17 next year, will be available for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

It centres on the dazzling one-two punch provided by the quick-witted Captain James T Kirk and endlessly-logical Lieutenant Commander Spock, which has been delighting followers since the 1960s.

Back then, of course, it was William Shatner sporting cool sideburns and Leonard Nimoy wearing the pointy ears, but they were replaced by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto respectively in the successful 2009 cinematic reboot. And both gents have kindly leant their likenesses to this game to give you the chance to enjoy some top-quality co-op gameplay.

While announcing the release date for the game, which features a brand-new story written by BAFTA-winning Marianne Krawczyk, the developers also revealed that pre-orders will provide access to the Elite Officer pack.

This add-on will give gamers the chance to dress the Enterprise's leading bromance in several variant uniforms, including the Kobayashi Maru and Academy outfits featured in the 2009 movie.
