Apple launches new iPhone range and Series 4 smartwatch
Apple has announced three new iPhones and a new smartwatch at a special Keynote in California. Let’s let’s take a closer look at the launch…
Apple has just unveiled three new iPhones and an updated Apple Watch. The new iPhones will be known as iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR, and they all share features and tech that are truly off the scale. But first of all, let us explain the key differences between each one.
The iPhone XS Max has a massive 6.5-inch display – the biggest ever on an iPhone – and it looks incredible. Along with the iPhone XS, it has the most storage space of any iPhone - up to a massive 512GB, which is enough space to hold 200,000 photos.
The iPhone XS comes with the same amazing features as the XS Max, but boasts a 5.8-inch screen – the same as on the iPhone X.
The iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch display, with the most advanced LCD screen that’s ever been seen in a smartphone. Even though it has a bigger screen than the iPhone 8 Plus, the handset is smaller thanks to some clever design-work.
The battery life is fantastic on all models too, roughly an hour and a half more than iPhone 8 Plus. Let’s take a look at some more impressive features shared by all three of these new iPhones...
Portrait mode with depth control
These new iPhones show a real improvement in Bokeh (those great photos with professional-looking blurry backgrounds). Once you’ve taken a photo in portrait mode, you can adjust the depth of field after you’ve taken the picture, focusing the foreground as much you like until you get it just right.
Aside from the brilliant Bokeh, the dual 12MP camera is an absolute beauty, and it does so many jobs at once - auto exposure, auto white balance, auto focus, noise reduction – and that’s just the start. You’re guaranteed crisp detail, bright colours and top-quality photos, day or night.
Incredible video in low light
Videos look great in 4K, and you’ll be amazed how good they look even when you’re shooting in low light, so prepare for those dawn walks and sunset views to look even more dramatic on film. And with four built-in microphones, videos will sound good in surround sound too.
Once again, there’s no home button, but with advanced Face ID, your iPhone will recognise your face and unlock faster than ever. It’s the most secure facial authentication ever in a smartphone, which means your Apple Pay purchases are super safe.
Dual SIM capability
For the first time in an iPhone, there’s dual SIM capability. So, whether you like to keep separate numbers for work and home, want to use a different plan when you’re travelling, or have another good reason for having two different plans on one phone, it’s now easier than ever.
Apple Watch Series 4
Apple also unveiled the 4th Series of their iconic smartwatch and it’s a thing of beauty. The Apple Watch Series 4 will be available in two sizes (40mm and 44mm) and the display on each one is 30% larger than the Series 3.
The watch face has been redesigned to give lots more detail and graphic-rich information, and the speaker has been revamped too. It’s 50% louder, and the microphone has been moved further away to prevent interference, making calls a lot clearer.
Behind the face there’s an all-day battery and a new 64-bit dual-core processor twice as fast as the Series 3. Add in a whole stack of health features – including the ability to recognise potential heart disease and other conditions – and you’ve got a smartwatch that sounds unbeatable.
