Looking to get fit in the New Year? You’re not alone. January sees a surge in gym memberships as we vow to work off the Christmas feasting and sculpt the body we’ve always wanted. At least until February. Will power is difficult.

And that’s where tech comes in. Whether you’re planning to join a gym or would just like to get some exercise by running, cycling or playing sports – there are apps to help you along the way.

So, we’ve put together a list of some of the best workout apps, best gym apps and best weight loss apps. All to help you smash those New Year goals.

 

Apps for smartwatches

Fitbit App

This is a great all-round app that can do pretty much anything. Looking to count your steps? Want something to track your workouts? Keep an eye on your weight or even sleep? The Fitbit app does it all. Plus, you can track your progress on a dashboard.

Of course, you will need a Fitbit to use this app, but thankfully we’ve got plenty of great models to choose from.

 

Garmin Connect

If you want another all-rounder, Garmin Connect os a good option. You’ll get read outs from everything from heart rate, activity tracker plus you can compete against friends also on the app. It’s a great way to track your progress and beat your best. You’ll need to pair the app with your Garmin smartwatch to get started.

Free fitness apps

Strava

If you’ve got a smartphone and your GPS is turned on, you can use Strava. It’s great for outdoor exercise – whether you’re a runner or a cyclist. It also has its own social network and user league tables to keep you competitive. It can also be integrated with smart devices to track other kinds of workout and unlock other features.

My Fitness Pal

If you want to lose weight, this app might be the one for you. It tracks both the exercise you do and what you eat. A great way to count calories, this is the ideal app for working off those extra pounds put on over Christmas. You can even scan product barcodes and My Fitness Pal will work out the calories for you. Also compatible with many smart devices.

Zombies, Run!

If you find jogging a bit boring, you’re not alone. That’s where Zombies, Run! Makes it fun. For every single run you do, you take the part of a runner trying to survive a zombie outbreak. You’ll meet new characters and lose yourself in the stories. And, with the terrifying sound of zombies bearing down on you, you’ll run like hell!
