Understand the different stages of sleep
Before we look at what sleep trackers can offer, it’s useful to know a bit about the different stages of sleep we go through.
If you’re one of those lucky so and so’s who can close their eyes, drift off in minutes and then wake eight hours later, you might not realise that sleep is actually quite complicated.
A full night’s sleep is made up of light, deep and REM sleep. Light sleep is the first stage when your heart rate slows down and your breathing evens out. This tends to last about 10 to 15 minutes before you start to fall into deep sleep. REM sleep usually happens about 90 minutes after initially falling asleep and usually only lasts a few minutes. REM is when you’ll experience most of your dreams which can increase movement and heart rate.
All of these different states trigger different reactions in the body, from changes in heart rate and breathing to physical movement. Sleep trackers are able to collect all that data, so you can see exactly what’s happening while you sleep.
