New York

The birthplace of Fashion Week, it’s no secret that New York is a major player in the fashion industry. There’s a creative energy in the city that can’t be found anywhere else in the world and it is also undeniably one of the best shopping destinations in the world.

Style in the Big Apple is all about confidence and dressing with purpose. It’s also a hugely diverse city, and the fashion reflects that. If in doubt, the unspoken NYC rule is to go all black. New Yorkers have a talent for making an entirely black outfit look unique by trying different silhouettes and accenting with statement accessories.

Key fashion events and attractions

New York Fashion Week (each February and September)

One of the biggest fashion events in the world, NYFW is largely reserved for fashion insiders. However, there are some cool events open to the public worth keeping your eyes open for.

The Costume Institute

The Costume Institute boasts an expansive collection of fashion items across seven centuries. The famously extravagant Met Gala marks the opening night of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit.

Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)

The Museum at FIT is the only museum in New York dedicated solely to fashion, and its archives hold over 50,000 costumes, textiles, garments and accessories from the 18th century onwards.

The cost of shopping

A pair of jeans will cost an average of
$65-$130 USD / £50-£100

A summer dress will cost an average of
$22-$54 USD / £17-£42

A pair of running shoes will cost an average of
$65-$130 USD / £50-£100

Top fashion college

Parsons School of Design

As one of the top fashion schools in the world, Parsons has turned out talent such as Donna Karen, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford and Alexander Wang. The college offers courses in fashion design, fashion business and fashion marketing, and many of their famous grads often come back to hold workshops.

As well as having a rich fashion history, the ‘big four’ fashion capitals are supported by the best fashion schools and the buzz of creative activity that surround and influence the young talent. As new fashion cities emerge, it will be difficult for them to compete on the same level against these empires in the industry.
