We thought the Galaxy S7 looked amazing when we covered its launch at Mobile World Congress few weeks ago, and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it for a proper look.
Now we’ve been able to catch up with our colleague at Carphone Warehouse, who was lucky enough to spend a week with Samsung’s new device.
What is the Galaxy S7 and how is it different?
Think of the S7 as more of an update on the popular S6 model than a completely new design – packed with cool new features that make browsing, taking photos and gaming a breeze, including:
- Improved 12 megapixel camera
- Clever battery-saving tech
- Return of waterproof design and MicroSD slot that were absent from the S6 range
The S7 looks slick with a curved metal back that perfectly disguises the rear camera – there’s no bump sticking out, which makes the phone more comfortable to hold.
The glass-encased screen looks great and is ultra-responsive when you use it. With it, you get:
- Brighter and more vivid colours thanks to the quad-HD screen
- Deeper, more vibrant blacks with Samsung’s signature super AMOLED display
- Razor-sharp picture quality for looking at your photos and watching movies in full glory
So does it look and feel as good in real life? Carphone Warehouse thought so, saying: ‘The screen looked dazzling… Colours look brighter, pictures look sharper and you notice the difference straight away.’
See how the S7 looks, fresh out of the box
Speaking of cameras, the S7 has been fitted with a 12 megapixel camera complete with Dual Pixel focus – normally found on a DSLR. It’s great for shooting in low light thanks to the wider aperture and faster shutter speed.
Carphone Warehouse took it out for a spin, and the results were seriously impressive – even when getting up close for a macro shot of some flowers. Take a look for yourself here.
Smartphones make a great sidekick – until you drop them into water and they’re ruined, that is. Samsung agrees and has brought back the waterproofing feature we saw on its earlier models.
In fact, the S7 boasts an IP68 waterproof rating, which means it can be submerged in 1.5m water for 30 minutes without damage – no more leaving your waterlogged phone in a bag of rice to dry overnight.
The S7 has a larger battery than its predecessor, which means it lasts a lot longer. There’s also a few hacks built in to make the way you use it more efficient.
With the Always On display your notifications are permanently shown on screen, even if the phone is switched off – so a quick glance is all you need to check your email, messages and missed calls.
Samsung reckons it only drains <1% of your phone’s battery every hour, and it uses less power than it takes to unlock your phone and light up the whole screen to see your notifications.
And for the times when you are running low on juice, charging is ultra-speedy with the new Samsung charger. It uses Adaptive Fast Charging tech to charge your phone in the most efficient way possible.
Does it stand up to the test? Carphone Warehouse say: ‘The full battery got me through the next two days – an impressive feat for any new phone as I tend to use them pretty intensely to start with.’
Whether you like to play fast-paced console games on your phone or are more of a casual Candy Crusher, the S7 is built for gaming with a powerful processor and built-in cooling system to stop it overheating.
You can also play your favourite games, distraction-free with the special game launcher app. With it you can:
- Turn off alerts so you won’t have them pinging up mid-session
- Lock the back and home keys so you don’t accidentally exit the game when you’re really into it
- Record gameplay and watch it back later
- Quickly minimise the game to check something and restore it
What’s it like to use? Carphone Warehouse say: ‘You could lose yourself in the game without getting distracted by emails and other apps.’
S7 – a hands-on review
So is the S7 really as good as it sounds after spending a few days with it?
Carphone Warehouse called it the ‘best phone’ they’ve ever used, saying: ‘I can’t believe how good the screen looks and the two-day battery life is impressive. But the thing I really like is that it just feels good and gives you a real sense of quality.’
