FIFA 13 reigns supreme

FIFA 13 has held on to the number one spot in the UK games charts after an “unprecedented” launch.

FIFA 13 has seen off the zombies of Resident Evil 6 with the panache of a Lionel Messi chip to hold on to the number one spot in the UK games charts after an "unprecedented" launch.

The game has been breaking more records than our parents did plates on package tours to Greece in the 1970s. It sold 4.5 million copies worldwide in its first five days to surpass the series' own sales record and become the most successful sports simulation game ever.

This was after it had already become the fourth game in UK history to sell more than a million in one day, as well as being behind Electronic Arts' busiest ever day for online gaming with 800,000 people playing on September 30.

If you're a FIFA devotee - or live with someone who is - this may not come as a huge surprise. You'll already know all about the breathless excitement generated by the latest instalment of the franchise as fans clamour to reserve a copy of the game which allows them to act out their footballer fantasies without leaving their front room via their Xbox 360 or PS3.

Up and down the country FIFA fever is turning sofas into impromptu dugouts where dreams are both made and broken as gamers try to emulate the respective goal scoring antics of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in Sunday's El Clasico. With the online game many will be looking to atone for last season's wrongs, bamboozling Dave from accounts with crunching tackles and darting runs. In a statement on October 3 EA said some 66 million online FIFA 13 sessions had already been played.

The game has developed cult status all over the world, with the latest instalment recognised as the top seller in 40 countries after launch.

EA Sports Andrew Wilson said: "FIFA 13 is a critical and commercial success unprecedented in sports entertainment.
"Every minute of every day millions of fans around the world are experiencing what the critics have already said - FIFA Soccer 13 is the biggest and best sports game we have ever created."

FIFA 13, Resident Evil 6 and Borderlands 2 held the top three sports respectively in Chart-Track's all formats games chart for the week ending October 6.
