At the Game Awards on 7 December, a surprise announcement came out of the blue. Namely, a new game from the creative brains behind the original Fallout, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky.
The game in question? The Outer Worlds.
Little is known about the plot for the time being, but it looks like it’s cut from the same cloth as Fallout, albeit with a science fiction setting and numerous planets to explore. Think No Man’s Sky meets Fallout meets Mass Effect. If it’s half as good as that sounds, we’re in for a treat.

Who is making The Outer Worlds?
The Outer Worlds is in development at Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian is comprised of team members who made the original Fallout in 1997. The video game developer is also responsible for 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas.
Is The Outer Worlds published by Microsoft?
No. Despite the fact Microsoft is in the process of acquiring developers, Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds will be published by Private Division, an exciting new publishing house that aims to put money behind less cash-flush projects.
Our best guess is that once The Outer Worlds is out, Obsidian will begin developing exclusively for Microsoft and its platforms.
Is The Outer Worlds Xbox only?
No. Because The Outer Worlds is being published by Private Division, not Microsoft, The Outer Worlds will be a console game and available on both the PS4 and Xbox One. It’ll also be coming to PC gamers.
Is The Outer Worlds single player?
Yes. Developer Obsidian describes it as a “single-player first-person sci-fi RPG.” That’s quite a mouthful, but it illustrates the point clearly enough. Like the Fallout games, you’re going to be in the shoes of your protagonist. Of course, the game being single-player only means you won’t be able to use split screen to link up with friends co-operatively.
Will you be able to make a character in The Outer Worlds?
Yes, you’ll create a character from scratch. You’ll be in the shoes of a voiceless protagonist, a trick old RPGs used to use, and a storytelling device made famous by the Half-Life games.
When will The Outer Worlds will be released?
The game is pencilled in for 2019. Reports suggest the game has been in development for a number of years, so expect this to be a realistic release date window.
Will The Outer Worlds have microtransactions?
No. Tim Cain set the record straight in an interview with Gamestar. “There are no microtransactions in the game. You buy it once and then enjoy it forever,” Cain said.
Is The Outer Worlds a AAA game?
AAA is used to describe games made on a big budget, but all reports suggest that The Outer Worlds is a AA title, one that is made on a smaller budget.
Is The Outer Worlds using Fallout’s game engine?
Reports suggest The Outer Worlds is being built on the Unreal Engine 4, which is a powerful and versatile tool that developers say is easy to use. Expect The Outer Worlds to benefit visually from the use of this engine.
