Gamescom 2019 is Europe's answer to E3, and its Opening Night Live event on Monday 19 August saw some huge new game releases being announced. Here’s our roundup of the highlights.
Gears 5 is the latest entry in Microsoft’s much-loved Gears of War series of third-person shooters. And Opening Night Live treated us to a first look at the all-new Horde Mode. This lets four players team up in an effort to survive increasingly tough hordes of enemies, and it looks like a whole lot of fun. It features some new abilities to master, and introduces some characters you’ll be familiar with if you’ve ever played Halo: Reach.

Hideo Kojima is the legendary game creator behind the Metal Gear series, and this is his first new game since 2015’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Death Stranding has been kept well under wraps until now, so excitement was high when some new characters and gameplay were revealed during Opening Night Live. It gave us a much better idea of what the game involves, but there’s still a lot of mystery behind it.
What we do know is that the game’s hero is Sam Bridges (who you might recognise as the Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus), and he’s on a mission to ‘bridge’ divides across a hostile landscape populated by some seriously sinister monsters.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is going to be one of the biggest gaming events of the year, and PS4 players will get the first chance to play it, with a PS4 exclusive Alpha test trial announced at Opening Night Live.
The PS4 Alpha test trial starts on Friday 23 August 2019, with the new 2v2 Gunfight mode added. The first team to win five rounds in Gunfight gets the victory, and teams begin each round with a random weapon loadout. To succeed in Gunfight mode, you and your team will need to adapt to these random load-outs in five new maps specifically designed for intense gameplay; Stack, King, Speedball, Docks, and Pine. Other new modes available on launch will include 6v6, 10v10, 20v20, and 100+ matches.

Borderlands 3 is on its way, and like previous games, it’ll be chock-full of legendary tombs filled with treasures and monsters.
Opening Night Live saw developer Gearbox Software reveal details of what the Borderlands 3 endgame will involve. And while some of it is pretty much what fans expected, there’s also some brand-new content that's never been seen before.
In addition to the familiar Circle of Slaughter with waves of enemies to defeat, the endgame will have a new mode called the Proving Grounds. This is a race against the clock, where you’ll need to blitz through three areas full of baddies and beat a boss in half an hour. Should be easy, right?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
And finally, here’s a real treat for Nintendo Switch owners. During Opening Night Live, a new trailer revealed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will soon be available on the nation’s favourite portable console.
The multi-award-winning game is a huge open-world adventure where you play Geralt of Rivia, a hard-working monster slayer by trade. With a novel-like story spanning over 150 hours of gameplay, this game could even give Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a run for its money in the epic fantasy stakes. And that’s high praise indeed.
The Complete Edition gives you all the downloadable content that was ever released for Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, including the Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine story expansions. Both are seriously large, and will add even more action-packed hours to your quest.
