New Xbox reveal set for May 21
25 Apr 2013|
The next version of the Microsoft Xbox games console will be unveiled on May 21, it has been revealed.
This is news for which gamers the world over have long been waiting, and after many reports of rumoured release dates for the machine hacks dubbed the Xbox 720, we finally have something official to hold onto.
The news came in an invitation to the media sent on Wednesday and a blog post from Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.
The invitation to the event was titled, Xbox: A New Generation Revealed.
It read: "Don Mattrick and the Xbox team invite you to the Xbox campus for a special unveiling."
If you're wondering who Don Mattrick is, he's the president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division, which includes the Xbox.
Meanwhile, the blog of Major Nelson - aka Larry Hryb - tells us more about the Xbox reveal, and even features a cute little clock counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds 'til the event.
The Major Nelson blog reads: "On Tuesday May 21, we'll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment.
"On that day, we'll share our vision for Xbox, and give you a real taste of the future. Then, 19 days later at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, we'll continue the conversation and showcase our full line-up of blockbuster games.
"We are thrilled to pull back the curtain and reveal what we've been working on."
The event in Redmond, Washington, will get under way at 10am local time.
For those not lucky enough to have blagged an invite to the launch event at Microsoft campus, the announcement will be broadcast live on the Xbox and Spike TV - ever so considerate to us folk at home.
When news breaks that we want to share, we inevitably head to the social media networks these days. Microsoft is across this, creating a hashtag for the event - #XboxReveal - so we can follow the latest news and express our thoughts via Twitter.
Tech commentators expect Microsoft to showcase how the new Xbox transcends gaming during the May event, as well as detailing its main technical features and specifications.
This year is set to be a big one for next-gen consoles: earlier in 2013, Sony revealed its PlayStation 4 at a star-studded event in New York.
The console boasts improved storage and graphics on the previous version as well as the ability to share recorded game play clips. The PS4 also has an updated DualShock controller with a touchpad and a share button.
The public unveiling of the new Xbox takes place three weeks before the games industry trade show E3 in Los Angeles.
