Nintendo Switch: One year on and going strong

The Nintendo Switch games console is one year old, and it’s Nintendo’s fastest selling device. Let’s see what it’s all about, one year on...

Just over a year ago, Nintendo released an unusual looking product called the Switch. This two-in-one games console (it works on your TV and as a portable gaming tablet) quickly took the gaming world by storm, and has become Nintendo’s fastest selling device. So, one year on, let’s take a look at what makes the Switch tick, and why it’s been such a runaway success.

Nintendo Switch

What is the Nintendo Switch?

The unique thing about the Switch is that it’s both a handheld and home games console. You can easily ‘switch’ from playing it as a gaming tablet to playing it on your TV. And the games you play on TV are exactly the same ones that you play on the go.

When you want to use the Switch at home, you simply plug it into a special dock connected to your TV. If you then want to head out and use the Switch as a mobile gaming console, you just remove it from the dock. If you’re in the middle of a game it instantly transfers from your TV onto the console screen, so you can carry on exactly where you left off.

What’s in the box?

Inside the Switch box, you’ll find a 6.2-inch tablet, two Joy-Con controllers, a Joy-Con grip, a TV dock, and a couple of cables.

The two Joy-Con controllers are incredibly versatile. You can hand one to a friend for some two-player console action. You can strap them to your wrists and hold one in each hand to play a game on your own. And if you want a more traditional gaming experience, you can slot them into the Joy-Con grip and turn it into a standard game pad. When you want to go mobile, attach each one to the sides of your tablet and it becomes a mobile games console.

The 6.2-inch tablet also includes a kickstand, which gives you the option of propping it up in front of you and playing games with a Joy-Con controller in each hand.

What about the games?

Even though it’s barely a year old, the Switch is already home to some of Nintendo’s best ever games. Here are five that we think should be on every new Switch owner’s shopping list.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

This is the smash-hit game that debuted alongside the Switch. The sheer scale is incredible, and you’ll need to travel huge distances as you collect weapons and armour, fight monsters, solve puzzles and complete side-quests.

Super Mario Odyssey

The story follows Mario as he travels to various kingdoms on his airship Odyssey, in a bid to stop his nemesis Browser forcibly marrying Princess Peach. Each kingdom has a number of different objectives for Mario to complete, so that he can explore new worlds and track down the beastly Browser.

Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2 is a multiplayer shooter with a family-friendly difference. Instead of bullets, your weapons are filled with coloured ink, so you ‘splat’ rather than shoot your enemies. Matches are frantic, fast-paced and intense, and it all adds up to the most fun you can have with an ink gun.

Mario Kart 8

The greatest Mario Kart ever is on the Switch, and it’s a match made in heaven. There are bigger tracks, 42 Nintendo-themed characters, and gravity-defying vehicles that can drive across walls and ceilings, and fly through the air. It’s an essential purchase for Switch owners.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

Rather than the platform game you might expect, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is actually a turn-based strategy game. The evil Rabbids have taken over the Mushroom Kingdom, and it’s up to Mario to save the world by solving puzzles and launching tactical attacks.

Look out for more great Switch games coming in 2018. A new Pokemon game is definitely on the cards, along with Super Smash Bros, Mario Tennis, Crash Bandicoot, and Metroid Prime 4 – a futuristic shooter that Nintendo fans have now been waiting over a decade for.

Are there any extra features on the Switch?

Nintendo recently added the ability to record short clips of gameplay on the Switch. Gamers can simply hold the ‘capture’ button on the controller to record up to 30-seconds worth of action. This can then be shared on the usual social channels.

A TV streaming feature could also be on its way. US Switch owners already have the Hulu streaming app, so it’s possible that we could see the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime or BBC iPlayer make an appearance in 2018.

So... what are you waiting for?

The Switch has been a huge success, and it’s easy to see why. You can play on your own or with friends. You can play at home or when you’re out and about. You can play fun family games or more in-depth ones aimed at older players. No other console is as versatile.

If the Switch continues to surprise us with incredible games and exciting new features, its second year could be even better than the first.
