The 5 best TV dads
Last month, as part of a Father’s Day competition, we asked bloggers to tell us their top five TV dads. From Homer Simpson to Peter Griffin, it’s clear the dads we love most are the ones that make us laugh. Although bloggers’ favourite fathers tended to be lazy, obese and often alcoholics, what they all had in common was their devotion to their family. So who were our bloggers’ top TV dads? Let’s take a run-through…
5. Fred Flintstone and Phil Dunphy
Coming in joint fifth on our bloggers’ lists are Fred Flintstone from the Flintstones and Phil Dunphy from Modern Family. Fred Flintstone may be one of the most accident-prone and short-tempered cartoon dads around but he’s also one of the most doting. Okay, he has some bad habits (drinking, gambling to name a few) but when it comes to Pebbles, Wilma and the rest of the Flintstone clan, he’ll ya-ba-da-ba-do anything.
Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy is another example of a flawed but loveable dad. He’s super competitive even with his own kids and lazy when it comes to household chores. But, he’s also desperate to be a ‘cool dad’ and find new ways to bond with his kids. And with his corny sense of humour, he’s the perfect pick for any list of top TV dads.
4. Walter White
Breaking Bad’s Walter White comes in at number four and may seem a surprise choice, considering his criminality and drug dealing ways. But, what makes Walter such a top dad is that his descent into the murky drug world is driven by a well-meaning desire to provide for his family. He’s willing to do whatever it takes to look after his wife and kids – even if it involves crime, illegal goings and dealing with a baddie or two.
3. Peter Griffin
Peter Griffin from Family Guy was the third most popular choice on bloggers’ lists. Which isn’t particularly shocking, since he’s one of America’s best loved dads. Peter doesn’t have a lot going for him: he’s rude, obese and loves one too many pints down The Clam. But he’s also insanely funny. Peter’s complex but often touching relationship with his kids shows that when it comes to his family, his heart’s in the right place.
2. Jim Royle
Jim Royle was our second most mentioned dad and if you’ve seen the Royle Family you’ll know there’s no-one quite like him. Jim’s also rude (there’s a theme here), frequently farts and spends most of his hours in front of the TV. But despite all his flaws, he’s got a cracking sense of humour - giving birth to one of the nation’s favourite catchphrases “my arse”. So, why’s he such a popular TV dad? Apparently, almost all our bloggers said he reminded them of their own dad. Aww.
Topping the list of bloggers’ favourite fathers is Homer Simpson. He’s been called “the greatest comic creation of [modern] time” which is about right, considering how awesome he is on so many levels. Despite being lazy, overweight and, perhaps, a sandwich short of a picnic, he’s also genuine, sweet and sincere. Whether it’s trying to help Lisa with her homework or rescuing Maggie from being adopted by the Flanders family, Homer gets the big thumbs up from our bloggers as the top TV dad.
Tons of bloggers got involved in the competition using our dedicated #toptvdads hashtag. Here are just a few of their tweets.
A big well done to Wendy from Inside the Wendy House blog for writing the winning post. Wendy won a 48" Samsung SUHD TV for her dad this Father’s Day. Sit back, relax and enjoy.
That about ends our list of TV dads. Who makes your list? Have we missed anyone off? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
